To start off, i am going to use the song "Counting Stars" by One republic. The verse where i found a type of figurative language is "I see this life Like a swinging vine Swing my heart across the line In my face is flashing signs Seek it out and ye shall find". The specific part i am using is "I see this life like a swinging vine, swing my heart across the line." This is an idiom because this cannot be taken literally. There is never going to be a vine that comes swinging around and take your heart swinging with it. Thats just not literal and could never happen. In this song, there are a lot more examples of figurative language that can make this song funny and make people who hear it have to think about what the writer is thinking.
Moving on, another song with an example of figurative language is "Speak Now" by Taylor Swift. There is a simile in this song and it states "And the organ starts to play a song that sounds like a death march." This song is about a young girl getting married and stopping her wedding on train tracks. This simile is telling you that the organs started playing music, but there is no such thing as a death march so when it says that, it just means heavy, dark music. If there was really such thing as a death march, that would be like a bunch of death people marching around and nobody really wants that to happen. In simile's, they use the words "like" "as" or "than" to make a comparison. In this line they use the word like to compare the loud music to dead people marching.
Then, a song with a hyperbole in it is the song "Grenade" by Bruno Mars. When Bruno writes "I’d catch a grenade for ya, Throw my hand on the blade for ya, I’d jump in front of a train for ya, You know I’d do anything for ya, See I, would go through all this pain, Take a bullet straight through my brain". Bruno Mars doesn't really mean all of this. Yes, someone may want to do anything for someone but these examples in this song are over exaggerating. A hyperbole is when there is an extreme exaggeration.
Finally, as you can see, figurative language is used everywhere. You may not notice it, but even in the smallest amount of words you say, there could be figurative language in it. Every song you hear, there could be a little bit of figurative language in it. Some authors or writers use figurative language to make their story or music more interesting. By using figurative language, you could make things funnier and understand things in different ways. I hope that now you know what figurative language is and that when you are reading or singing or looking at something, you will try to find examples of figurative language.
